WARNING TO EVERYONE POSTING IN THE INTERNET

Greetings,

This is a timely email received on how what you post in the internet could come back to hurt you in many ways you could imagine! Read on:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
** POSTING IT? THINK AGAIN

If you are like the vast majority of Xanga, Facebook and MySpace users, what you post online is intended for your friends. But imagine that others are looking at your posts, too - some of whom you really want to impress, but haven't met yet. People who are in a position to direct your future.

That's exactly what's happening all over the country. Regardless of how private you may feel your pages are, the fact is, if you're online, you're in public. And college admissions counselors are keenly interested in what you have to say on your site.

"Posting on the Web is like standing next to someone and wondering why they hear your conversation," says Nate Mouttet, assistant vice president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) in Washington, D.C. "Because Web sites are public information, it is something admissions offices can and sometimes do use. If it contradicts the way you present yourself in your application or interview, the admissions office will probably take that into account."

It's not that you shouldn't be involved in social networks online, Mouttet says, but you just need to be conscious that what you post is open for all to read.

Traffic on Facebook grew 272 percent for the year ending February 2006, making it the 66th most popular Web site, according to comScore Media Metrix. Traffic on MySpace grew 318 percent during the same time frame, rocketing it to the top social networking site on the Web and the eighth most popular Web site overall. By May 2006, it had reached 50 million visitors.

Author Dawn Eden started her blog "The Dawn Patrol" in 2002. While she didn't always follow guidelines in her writing, in recent years she started being more careful. She doesn't write about everything in her personal life anymore, for instance, but chooses details with a universal aspect to them worth sharing. And she makes sure the stories are nothing she'd be embarrassed about.

Eden's tip for blogging teens applying to college? "For one thing, know how to spell," she says. "It just looks juvenile to write on your blog as if you're instant messaging someone. A college won't be impressed if they see your online writings are all in obscure acronyms and misspellings."

MySpace has become more popular among older Internet users comScore Media Metrix reports. While teens ages 12-17 accounted for 24.7 percent of the MySpace audience in August 2005, by October 2006 they represented just 11.9 percent of the site's total audience. At the same time, Internet users between the ages of 35-54 accounted for 40.6 percent of the MySpace visitor base, an 8.2 percent increase during the previous year. You'd have to think some of these 35- to 54-year-olds are working at the colleges you'd like to attend and are checking you out.

Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida systematically searches for each applicant in social networking sites. "If there is any blatantly sexual content or content about drinking or drugging on the student's pages, those things would be concerns to us," says Buck James, vice president for enrollment services. "We would interact with the student about it and see what the response is."

James is quick to point out blogs can impress him favorably as well, such as photos and reflections about church involvement and missions work.

The concern about your behavior won't end once you've been accepted to college, either. No matter where you enroll, your online presence can directly affect your standing.

Slanderous comments about professors or descriptions about activities in violation of your institution's community standards can jeopardize your status. Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, temporarily suspended its women's soccer program last year after hazing photos surfaced online. At least one school, Kent State in Ohio, banned athletes from using Facebook.com at all. One student was kicked out of Arkansas' John Brown University in 2006 for activities he chronicled on Facebook that ran counter to the university's code of conduct.

Dan Mortensen, vice president for student life at Valley Forge Christian College in Pennsylvania, says that while VFCC doesn't routinely peruse students' MySpace or Facebook pages, when alerted to inappropriate content, the college is obliged to check it out.

"We are careful about confronting students just because of what they say," Mortensen says. "Expressions of concern about a college policy
do not typically result in staff intervention. However, if students are displaying photos or text describing behavior that is contrary to the college's expectation, that would concern us and we'd talk to the student about that."

It won't be just your college that's interested in your blog, either. Potential employers are forming first impressions long before the interview process begins. Even if some of your tales are fictional, the damage to your reputation can be very real.

A recent study by the executive search firm ExecuNet found that 77 percent of recruiters run searches of candidates on the Web to screen applicants; 35 percent of these same recruiters say they've eliminated a candidate based on the information they uncovered.

Jennifer George, former human resources administrator at the CCCU, Googled every candidate for hire to ensure that the information on the résumé and Web matched. In the process, she often discovered other insights. The candidate who wrote online that she "half-heartedly applied to a job in D.C." was, in George's mind, "asking not to be hired." Another candidate whose blog was full of expletives did not gain any points for the application process to the CCCU, a Christian organization.

In the end, it's not about censorship or free speech. It's about people deciding how closely they want to be associated with you. And what you say online can radically affect those potential relationships. Keep in mind - what you say or show online is in the public square.

What is your child learning today that you're not teaching? -52 in 2007 Basic Bible Truths study for week of 5/20-26

Greetings,

This is a very well documented article that could be useful for any concerned parent, youth worker and community workers. Here is article for your prayerful consideration and use with your own children.

I know that for some parents with problem children and grandchildren these is too late since they never had guidelines or boundaries when the children were growing up... then expected them to have discipline and self-control once they because teens and young adults and are horrified when they are promiscuous, taking drugs and messing up... no matter how many sermons they listened to from parents or churches, the lack of clear discipline and rules confused and angered them as children and they are out of control and seemingly unreachable... to those parents: God sees the mess you have created... but He is merciful to forgive you your sins of omissions... ask Him for forgiveness and help now! DON'T EXPECT AN INSTANT MIRACLE! You cannot unbend a twisted that had been growing the wrong way... rebellious children have also a will... you cannot mold them now, is too late... but God still can reach them... just shut up... keep them in your prayers! Amen!

Here is the article: ** WHAT IS YOUR CHILD LEARNING TODAY THAT YOU'RE NOT TEACHING?

Lindsay Harrup, a colleague's 15-year-old daughter, attends church regularly, is active in her youth group, is an honors student at a Christian school and is an ace on her notebook computer. That final detail puts her within clicking distance of a worldwide Web of information and misinformation.

At her parents' insistence, Harrup's Internet service provides a thorough filter to preempt any pornography she might stumble upon. Even so, that hasn't stopped the occasional unsolicited and insidious e-mail from slipping into her inbox.

"I immediately put that person's address on my block list," says Harrup, "so I never hear from them again."

Porn is not the only detrimental thing teenagers have to contend with on the Internet and in the world. Each day, up to 500 times according to some research, children and teens are bombarded with advertisements packed with messages telling them they would be happier or cooler if they owned or did this or that. Add these to the countless messages they are exposed to from movies, television, magazines, the Internet, music, video games and books and it is easy to see why so many children and teens are swayed from one product to the next and even from one worldview to the next.

Media and advertorial messages have the power to alter a young person's worldview, self-image and consumer tastes. They do so by making cogent claims about what is important in life, what constitutes right and wrong, and what parameters children and teens should use in measuring themselves against society's virtual yardstick of success.

A recent trip to the mall takes my family past billboards of picture-perfect models promoting light beer, instant tanning, 24-hour fitness centers, body piercing and must-have luxury cars. If Harrup stands in line with her dad at the grocery store, she can glance over headlines on a dozen magazines dealing with subjects never discussed around the family's dinner table.

In a world where everyone from toy manufacturers to Hollywood executives are vying for your children's attention it is a parent's duty, say experts "Today's Pentecostal Evangel" spoke with, to be staunch gatekeepers regarding what messages children and teens receive and embrace.

Many voices, many messages

"The media has replaced parents as the teachers regarding relationships and sexuality," says Fred Stoeker, author of "Every Young Man's Battle." "Parents need to be engaged in their children's lives or they will not have the impact they were designed to have."

As evidence Stoeker and other leaders point to a host of disturbing findings.

* According to the "Journal of Pediatrics" report "Impact of media on adolescent sexual attitudes and behaviors," the average youth spends one-third of each day with various forms of mass media, mostly without parental oversight.

* A University of California study found children spend more time watching television than in any other activity except sleep.

* Two-thirds of those 8 to 18 years old have a television in their bedroom.

* The "Journal of Pediatrics" reports preteens and teens with a television in their room are more likely to use drugs, smoke cigarettes, binge drink and have sex.

* The average child's home has three television sets, three radios, two VCRs, two CD players, one video game console and one computer (Kaiser Family Foundation, 1999).

Mixed messages

For some children Saturday mornings are exciting not because of the cartoons they are watching but because of the commercials they see. Marketers excel at combining sights, sounds, special effects and portrayals of extreme contentment in 30-second spots that engage and thrill children.

Parents today might remember commercials from their own childhood, such as Mean Joe Green tossing his jersey to a little boy in the tunnel at a stadium in exchange for a Coke. Or the Connect Four commercial where the girl beats her older brother with four across diagonally and he says, "Pretty sneaky, sis." Or the theme song for Oscar Mayer bologna: "My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R. My bologna has a second name, it's M-A-Y-E-R ..."

Point is, commercials and the media in general have a profound impact on those who consume them. Recent studies report commercials aimed at boys generally emphasize activity, but commercials aimed at girls usually highlight the importance of appearance. Some preteen girls have taken notice and have allowed persuasive advertisements to taint their body image. In a 2002 study, teenage girls who viewed commercials peopled with thin models expressed lower confidence, more anger, and dissatisfaction with their own weight and appearance.

By mid-adolescence, children have watched about 15,000 hours of TV (more time than they have spent with their parents or friends). Doing so has opened up a whole new world of ideas and viewpoints from which to choose. Much of what children see suggests unhealthy behaviors (e.g., drug use, violent tendency and sexual experimentation), if not actually beneficial, are normal and expected features of adult life.

Another study suggests children with higher exposure to sexual activity on TV were almost twice as likely as kids with lower exposure to initiate sexual intercourse. Parents may feel they are adequately monitoring sexual content by simply avoiding premium cable movie channels. But network TV is rife with sex.

In a sample of TV programming from the 2001-02 season, sexual content appeared in 64 percent of all TV programs. Those programs with sexually related material had an average of 4.4 scenes per hour.

Portrayals that included sexual risks, abstinence or need for sexual safety were depicted in only 15 percent of the shows with sexual content.

Vicki Courtney, mother of three teens and author of "His Girl" DVD series, offers one blatant example.

"MTV not long ago had a program about pimps and their prostitutes," she says. "I was thinking, What if my child were to watch something like this? What would they walk away thinking? And we know what they're walking away thinking when they're exposed to shows even like Desperate Housewives and The OC - sex is recreational. The main message they're getting from media at large - movies, music, television, the fashion magazines - is a clear message that sex is recreational."

Courtney says parents may not be able to keep their children from all explicit material, but they can create teachable moments when inappropriate content sneaks through their defenses.

"When you see that Victoria's Secret commercial and you can't get to the TV fast enough, or hear a song on the radio and you can't switch the station fast enough, take that opportunity to say, 'Wow, did I just hear what I thought I heard? Did you see that? Did you notice how they parade those women around there? Isn't that sad how the world has come to a place where girls try to dress this way and they think the only way they have worth and value is if they can look like that?' "

Internal and external defense systems

A few months ago Stoeker's son married. The wedding ceremony marked the first time his son, who is 23 years old, romantically kissed a woman. Though unusual, Stoeker says, raising children who are sexually pure is not impossible.

"This is not an easy thing," he admits, "but if we want to have children who don't struggle with sexual issues it's the price we have to pay. We have to teach our children to own their sexuality."

That price included taking a firm stand against the influence of culture. The Stoeker family engaged in bold conversations about sex, pornography and what true love looked like. When his children wanted to watch a movie or television program Stoeker and his wife previewed it - even when it came to PG-rated films. "There are going to have to be some hard decisions," he says.

Sometimes that meant their children had to give up outings with friends. At school his children would sometimes be laughed at for the stand the family took. But the benefits, he contends, far outweighed the price that was paid.

Stoeker says the children were spared from emotional hurts and bad relationships. One study shows teens who have sexual intercourse wish they would have delayed doing so. Thousands of other teens each year contract sexually transmitted diseases or endure unplanned pregnancies.

When Stoeker's son was dating the woman he eventually married they were never physically intimate. Instead they concentrated on getting to know each other in every other way. Doing so, says Stoeker, laid a foundation for a strong marriage that is now being enhanced by the physical expression of love.

The key to raising children who remain sexually pure, says Stoeker, is for parents to fear God more than they fear man or even what their children think of them.

Courtney agrees. "Parents have to decide they're going to be a parent first," she says. "They have to clip this thing of 'I want my child to like me and I want to be their buddy.' "

Dr. Ross Campbell, author of "How to Really Parent Your Teenager," agrees and says many parents mistakenly step away from their parenting duties when their children become adolescents.

"It's amazing to see a parent who is taking the responsibility of showing their teenager healthy ways of having a good time," Campbell says. "Adolescents love that, they crave that, and they flock to that parent's house to be under good influence."

But that type of home is rapidly vanishing, Campbell admits. "Most parents are not aware," he says. "They just do their own thing and hope things are going to turn out right."

One of the keys to standing strong at the gate to your child's heart and mind, says Stoeker, is to keep them from being influenced by the media by not becoming influenced yourself.

"If parents are demanding their children not watch movies or programs with sexual material, they should do the same," he explains. "If a child doesn't have their parents' good influence they don't even have a chance to create their own mind-set, let alone a Christ-like mind-set."

The right foundation

No matter how sophisticated or savvy children and teens may appear when it comes to their entertainment choices and products they want, experts say parents must keep in mind children are just children. In other words children need their parents to guide and direct them.

Stoeker and other leaders say the rules children should live by should come from God's Word and not legalism. They also encourage parents to not back down under the onslaught of advertising and media messages that go contrary to God's Word.

"We need to decide that God has entrusted us with these children," Courtney says. "We are called to be stewards and care for them for 18 years or more and to help guide them and train them."

Testimony of God's miracle - 52 in 2007 Basic Bible Truths study for May 13-19

Greetings,

I read the story and just want to pass it on to everyone to read on God’s miracle: healing from chronic pain while studying lesson on healing:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
** YOUTH HEALED WHILE STUDYING LESSON ON HEALING

Miracles don't just happen to "somebody else." In February 2006, this truth became a reality to 16-year-old Brent Gwin when he was miraculously healed while studying a BGMC lesson about healing.

A knee injury, two years prior, had left Gwin with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). The condition causes sympathetic nerves to "misfire" pain signals to the brain, causing chronic pain characterized by various degrees of burning pain, excessive sweating, swelling and sensitivity to touch.

There is no cure for RSD/CRPS. Treatments involve relieving the painful symptoms, which Gwin tried through pain management. He also implemented cautious behavior, avoiding even the slightest trauma that could trigger the flare-up of the RSD.

At the onset of a particularly painful RSD occurrence in his foot, Gwin visited his doctor who did an MRI to reveal a very deep bone bruise in the foot and inflamed ligaments. But nothing was showing that should have been causing the intense pain Gwin felt. There was nothing else the doctor could do.

"We would just have to 'ride this out'- not what we, or Brent, wanted to hear," says Gwin's mother Paula. "At that point, we had no idea how long Brent would be out of school because he couldn't walk or sit up without excruciating pain."

Once home from the doctor, Gwin, who serves as the children's church teacher at Sunnyside Assembly in Van Buren, Arkansas,USA where his parents pastor, began to prepare his lesson for the upcoming BGMC Sunday. The country being highlighted was Iceland, and by no coincidence, the true missions story was about healing.

"When I got home from work, I noticed that Brent seemed to be feeling better," Paula says. "The longer he studied that BGMC lesson on healing, the better his foot got. By the time we went to bed Friday night, he was able to put his foot under the cover - a major accomplishment because even the soft sheets felt like knives going through his foot."

That Sunday, Gwin went to church without the aid of crutches or his foot brace. He was able to provide the children with a real example of healing, as he testified that the longer he studied the BGMC lesson on healing, the better his foot felt.

Since February 2006, Gwin has been pain free and has had no problem with the RSD, even after several accidents that would have ignited the RSD in the past.

"When we were going through one of the worst times with this disease in October 2004," Paula says, "I asked God why this was happening to my child. It was definitely one of the hardest things we've ever been through."

"As I was pouring out my heart to [God]," Paula continues, "a song began to play on the radio by Casting Crowns [a Christian group] titled 'Voice of Truth.' All I could hear God say was, 'This is for MY glory!' So, I just want the world to know how great God is!"

Matthew 13 - 52 in 2007 Basic Bible Truths study week 5/6-12

Greetings,

When you prayerfully read and think on this study today you might realize, like I did, that sometimes we let what we know about someone close to us because we are family, living in the same home, stop us from receiving God’s blessings through them… sometimes we turn to someone unknown because we do not know them well enough to realize they might have frailties, faults, idiosyncrasies that we might not like or be uncomfortable with like the loved ones that we know at home… We need to stop familiarity from interfering with God’s ministry through those closer to us!

May you be blessed today with this weekly study. Amen.

>>> Ministry in Your Home by Larry Ollison, Ph.D.

In Matthew chapter 13 we find where Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth. While he was there, he taught the people of his hometown in their synagogue. His teaching was so anointed and so much different compared to what they were used to hearing that some even said, "Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?"

This statement by itself would seem complimentary. However, they continued on and said, "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?"

Then in verse 57 we find the result of their questioning. The Bible says that they became offended at him. Because they were offended, they did not believe Him. In Mark’s account of this incident, he said that Jesus could not do any mighty works there except that He laid hands on a few sick people and healed them.

Because the people of Nazareth became offended at Jesus, they restricted themselves from receiving great and mighty miracles in their city.

Let’s take a look at the reason they became offended. They became offended because they were familiar with Jesus and His family. As modern day Christians we must not fall into this same trap.

From time to time I will receive a phone call from someone who wants to make an "appointment" for me to lay hands on them for their healing or for some other type of ministry. When I ask them if they’ve asked the head of their household to do this, many times the reply is, "No, I would rather have you do it."

I do understand that there are times when we need our pastor or spiritual mentor to anoint us or lay hands upon us. However, we cannot allow the familiarity that we have with our spouses to restrict us from receiving from God through them.

Many of your greatest deliverances from the bondages of life can take place in your own home through the laying on of hands or prayer of agreement by one of the members of your own family. Don’t allow the spirit of familiarity to hinder you from receiving the blessings of God.

Jesus said, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." Reject the spirit of familiarity and receive ministry in your own home.

DON'T GIVE UP! 52 in 2007 Basic Bible Truths study 4/29-5/5

Greetings,

It is encouraging to have a word of comfort at a time of testing and trials! I thank God for such a word of life that I can share with you as the 52 in 2007 Basic Bible Truths study for week of April 29 to May 5: DON'T GIVE UP!

Don't Give Up by Larry Ollison, Ph.D.

Let me ask you a question. When you have a problem in your life, and you've done everything spiritually you know to do, what do you do then? When you have prayed and when you have confessed the confession of faith and it seems like nothing has changed, what do you do?

This seems to be a question often asked to those of us in the ministry. As a pastor of a growing church, this is a question that continually arises. So, what's the answer? What do we do when it seems like we've done all we can do and there is no manifestation of our deliverance?

This answer may seem simple, but here it is. Don't give up. When you know that you know that what you are believing for is God's will for you and promised in His Word, then do not quit doing what God has told you to do. Continue to believe God's Word and continue to confess His promise in the face of what you see and what you feel.

Second Corinthians 5:7 says, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." As believers it is disastrous to react on what we see, hear, or feel. Instead of reacting to the senses produced by the world, we must act according to the Word spoken by God. His Word brings deliverance and the words of the world bring destruction. When you feel like giving up, quit going by what you feel. Stand in faith and remember that Jesus said, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." (Mark 9:23).

Remember, you can do all things through Christ because He strengthens you to do the impossible.
